| Byron Nemeth has been working as a session guitarist ,
sideman and leader on the Cleveland music scene since the
1980s. He's a player cut from the same cloth as Joe Satriani ,
Jason Becker and Steve Vai, with several independent releases
to his credit.
On his latest the music is as you 'd expect - straight-ahead
prog rock with stinging sustained leads, strong melodies and
immaculate production. His crack band consists of Joe
Hengesbaugh on keyboards, Dave Clark on drums and Ed
Stephens on bass. While they 're all consummate soloists, the
emphasis is clearly on band interplay and service to the
material.
Highlights include the cleverly titled "Satrianimal," with its
catchy hooks and relentless drive, the title track 's austere and
majestic presence, Hengesbaugh 's exceptional keyboard
orchestrations on "Chocolate Factory," and the dueling keys and
fretwork of "Frankenstein's Lullaby."
There are some nice departures in the action with a jazzy
contribution by trumpeter Dominick Farinacci on "I Don't Mind "
and string arrangements and accompaniment by Joe Deninzon
on their version of the Beatles' "I am the Walrus ." - Eric |
